Computer Extremely Slow = Maintenance Needed - If your computer is extremely slow then try to clean up and organize your hard drive. For this you
could use either or both of two great tools from Windows (Disk Cleanup Utility, Disk Defragmentation
utility).
Both can be accessed using the menu path below:
Start Menu > All
Programs > Accessories > System Tools.
Disk Cleanup Utility - Disk Cleanup helps free up space on your hard drive. Disk Cleanup searches your drive, and then shows you temporary files, Internet cache files, and
unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can direct Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of
those files. The Disk Cleanup utility deletes many unnecessary and temporary files from your machine. This frees
up space on the hard drive and your computer will run faster as a result.
Disk Defragmentation Utility - This utility can also be found in your System
Tools folder, and its purpose is to reduce the amount of fragmentation on the hard disk. It does this, by
physically organizing the content of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and
contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction and so that your
computer can find information on the hard drive faster.
If neither the Disk Cleanup or Disk Defragmentation utilities produce sufficient improvements and
you still have an extremely slow computers, try other tips on this page.
Fix Computer registry - You may still find that your computer is still
extremely slow, if so there may be a further problem with your operating system's registry. The registry is
similar to a computer's library card catalog, telling your computer where to locate files and programs, and
what files should be opened when applications and other programs start.
Upgrading your RAM - If having done all the above, your computer's
performance is still insufficient, consider running a memory check and upgrading your RAM
Adware and Spyware Removal
- Scan your computer for any adware and
spyware. The problem with these undesirable software ist that they
slow down your computer by taking up space as well as invade your privacy (in the more extreme cases these
software can steal your passwords or even delete your hard drive's files).
